Good Fortune Daughters is the result of a mother and daughter’s 10-year odyssey to write and illustrate their family’s deeply moving, real-life saga that captures the heart of the French Canadian people. Michelle Belfie is the author and American daughter of Huguette Lafortune—or Alice Belfie as she is known today—a talented artist now residing in Michigan. Alice’s many beautiful illustrations bring her story to life, including black-and-white drawings for the young-adult book and full color for the children’s picture-book series.
Determined to write an accurate account, the pair tasked themselves with gathering extensive memories, photographs, mementoes and historical documents from many sources, most importantly from the Lafortune sisters themselves who were all raised in the rural farming community of L’Épiphanie in Québec, Canada where their story takes place.
Over the course of this book project, all of Alice’s (Huguette’s) remaining sisters passed away. Losing her beloved sisters brought great sadness, but she is grateful for having captured their story which carries forward their goodness, strength and eternal creativity.
To help promote Good Fortune Daughters, Michelle and Alice bring the following talents and energy to the table:
- The moving-making and social-media marketing skills of Michelle’s company People Power Hub.
- A mother-daughter team available for radio, online and in-person interviews.
- A network of our extended French Canadian family living in Quebec, both buzz creators and built-in demand for the book.
